PostRouting Algorithm - Nuvi 750 and 760 vs 5000  Fri Jun 20, 2008 5:58 pm    Reply to topic Reply with quote

I was playing around with the 760 and 5000 at CC yesterday and found that the 750 and 760 routed the same, but both routed differently (and less efficiently) than the 5000.

Interestingly, all 3 had different SW and Map versions.

What determines the routing algorithm?
Is it the map software, the base software version or something else?
Can you upgrade the routing algorithm?

The answer is "all of the above". The routing algorithms can change from device to device or from series to series-- but these days they don't change all that much.

But the algorithms also read the map data which goes a very long way in determining the route-- so changes there can have a big impact on the route.

Cool, thanks for the prompt reply.

I really like the Nuvis, but I hate how they route sometimes...my buddy has one and it just seems to take you all over the place when there are far more direct and faster ways. It seems like their "fastest" algorithm really isn't the fastest.

Example from yesterday, I was routed through 20 intersections in a city at 25mph, each having a light to contend with...rather than around all of it on a parkway with no lights and 65mph speed limit but maybe a mile longer. Clearly not shorter, but definitely much faster.

You will find that with every GPS... routes that you don't always agree with. Smile

Remember routing is also affected by preferences which you set, and they may have been different on the store models you tried. The Nuvi 5000 has some additional things to affect routing. You can exclude specific roads or whole areas from use in a route.

They were using the same settings, I manually set each one.

I did like that the 5000 had the custom avoids, but none were enabled during this testing. Too bad it doesn't have BlueTooth!

PostMy Son's 760 Routed Faster  Sat Jun 21, 2008 3:10 am    Reply to topic Reply with quote

I have a 5000 and I bought my son a 760. We were playing with them side by side. Set up identical destinations. His 760 routed about twice as fast as my 5000. However, I did not check the preferences to make sure they were identical.

I wonder if the 5000 is slower calculating a route because it needs to check each road to find out if it has been excluded with the "avoid" function?
