Acquiring Satellites on battery vs. plugged in Sat Jun 21, 2008 1:53 pm
I have noticed a significant difference between the time it takes my nuvi 750 to acquire a usable satellite signal when the unit is just running on batteries vs. when it's plugged into my car when turned on. When plugged in, it usually locks in within 5 - 10 seconds. But when on batteries, it can take a minute or two. I have tried this standing in the same spot each time in my driveway.
What would cause this? Does the power cord act like an extra antenna when plugged in? Does the satellite receiving chip (or whatever is in there) go into some kind of power saving mode when on battery?
When I plug my 760 into a cigarette lighter plug to AC patch cord that I purchased from Garmin, it will acquire w/i a few seconds. If I use the Nuvi with its own battery or USB port, it takes much longer.
