Download 2009 Maps nuvi200 Mon Jun 23, 2008 9:29 pm
Finally got myself registered. Had to telephone Garmin support. Got right through, no waiting this time and he helped me install the Communicator. He also guided me through installing the newest software version 4.1 (I believe) for our nuvi200.
I asked him about downloading the NEW maps and he said I could have DVD (I guess he meant CD) sent to me (they are on bBACK-ORDER at the moment) or I could download.
Would it be hard/difficult/confusing for me to download the NEW maps? When I looked in the Garmin nuvi folder, I see a lot of languages, but I think only one I would use would be English_American, and possibly English_British.
I do notice that each language mentioned has two files. One is a .vpm file with size of about 1MB and another file called .sum with size of about 1KB. Would those two files (for each language) have to be deleted?
How many languages have to be deleted? (Would we just put cursor over them and right-click DELETE?)
Saw a post that said we would have to have 37MB FREE space! Don't believe we have near that much now on our nuvi200. And that after download the install would take about 2 hrs. Don't know how true that is. And if that is true, would it be easier to get the CD (if it did not cost anything.)
Would it be easier/safer to get CD or would it be just as easy/safer to download new 2009 maps?
Alice
(P.S. We bought 6/20/08 and believe we have one month to download or order CD with 2009 maps. Wonder though if the CD would cost us anything.)
I saw this on the web "You DONT need to use the downloader provided by Garmin. You can just DL the file directly to your hard-drive and then click on the EXE file and it will self install."
Is that true? Are we asked if we want to use a "downlaoder?"
Do you know size of download? (32-37 MB?)
How long does it take (DSL)? I heard 1-2 hours or more.
(We deleted other languages and now show 46.8 FREE.)
How long did it take to install? I heard also 1-2 hours or more.
Forgive the many (seemingly stupid) questions but this is first time for me and my husband trying our hands at this. All very confusing for us.
Thanks,
Alice
P.S. Didn't see an American-English in Text folder, only British-English when we look in the Garmin folder (on PC), but it shows when we look in Settings/Language on nuvi200.
That is true, you can use the Garmin downloader or not... it will often be faster if you use the Garmin downloader.
The download is close to 2 GB in size. Once it downloads (which will entirely depend on the speed of your connection) it takes about 40 minutes to install.

I was told I only needed 32-37MB free space on the nuvi200 for the 2009 maps. I deleted other languages and now have 46.8. However, that doesn't appear to be enough to handle the 2GB download.
It is correct you only need that much free space for the install. But the maps themselves are over 1GB in size. The old maps are deleted and then the new maps are installed in their place.
