I just got a Nuvi 760 from costco and I'm having a few issues:
1. at 90%+ the speaker crackles: I did search, and it looks like this is a common issue that is only resolved by exchanging the unit.
2. about half the time, when I pull it out of the cradle, it will ask to turn off. The other half of the time, it just shuts off unexpectedly. Has this happened to anybody else?

1) another user posted the same voice distortion issue with a unit purchased from Costco. did you apply the XML 'hack' to increase the upper threshold of your TTS voice? If so you may want to back that change out as some say that has resulted in distortion for them.
I'm curious if Costco is selling refurbed units...only because someone reported the exact same issue with a Costco 760 within the last few days.
2) When I disconnect my 760 from a power source, it asks if I want to shut the unit off or leave it on (no action results in the unit shutting off in 30 secs). I can't recall that it ever just shut off.
1. I've had it for a few days and have not connected it to my computer yet.
2. It has just shut off on more than one occasion. I cant remember what it was doing at the time (navigating, map mode, etc.) I'll keep a closer eye on when it happens though.

1) I was the one who posted about the speaker crackling. I have a new one arriving tomorrow, so we'll see how it goes. The current one isn't as bad now after I backed out the TTS volume hack, but honestly I am not really using it since I know I have a new one coming.
2) As for the power issue, never had that problem. If you haven't hooked it to a computer yet, then you are using older firmware (For some reason I am thinking mine came with 2.4 or 2.5, but I can't remember). Maybe the newer versions fixed that. I would definitely upgrade to 3.0 and the 2009 maps.
As for Costco and refurbs - they usually don't sell refurb units. I would be very surprised if they were. I know they sometimes have their own custom models, but these should be identical to one purchased in a store. I have access to a Best Buy (very good friends with the manager) and I may go down to his store and try out a unit there. That'll help me to know whether or not it's isolated to Costco units.

I wonder if they just got a bad batch somehow. Interesting that two threads popped up on the board within a few days of each other with very similar issues.
