Post920, Navcore 8, maps oh my!!  Thu Jun 26, 2008 2:07 pm    Reply to topic Reply with quote

Hi all... I just got back after being out of country on a boat for a month (good times) and I updated my GPS, got the new Navcore and have been doing a bit of reading...

I want to confirm that v8 maps are not currently available for the 920, and because of this, IQ routes and lane guidance are not available for North America, but when they are purchasable, those functions will work?

I was looking on the shady side and I did find v8 maps so I was thinking of trying them out to see if they would be worth the purchase price since I already used my FMG to get 715.1712 maps.

Has anyone loaded v8 maps on a 920 with Navcore 8 yet?

EDIT - I am not condoning not paying for the maps. If I think the IQ routes and the lane guidance are worth the additional cost then I will buy them from Tom Tom as soon as they are available. I just like the idea of checking it out first!

Yeah, I suppose there is an equally strong argument that can be made that TT will never officially allow v8 maps with IQ and Lane Guidance, otherwise what reason would all of us junkies have to go out and buy x30 units to replace the x20's we bought a few months ago Shocked

On the other hand, TT says you can always get the latest maps and from what I understand it is the map files that re the key to IQ routes and lane guidance. Does this mean that we will no longer be able to get map updates or that TT will release different sets of map updates, one for x30 owners and one for x20 owners and others?

My guess is that they will become available for purchase during the next map update cycle.

Hello,

I'm from Norway. My first post here.

Provided you have Navcore 8 on your x20 unit, you can get version 8 maps by doing the following:

1. Go to www.tomtom.com
2. Go to the "map shop".
3. State that you have a x30 device
4. Purchase the vers. 8 map you want
5. Connect your device to the PC and run TT Home
6. You'll be offered to dowload and install the vers. 8 map you've already purhcased
7. Download and install this map on your device.

Now you have a x20 device that is similar to a x30 device. You have all the new features like IQ routes and Lane Assist.

I (and plenty of others here in Scandinavia and Europe) have already done this. I now have GO 520 that is in effect a GO 530.

As always, take a complete backup of all contents on your device (using your PC rather than TT Home) before you do this.

Svein, welcome, and thanks for sharing. I haven't (yet) heard of anyone in North America doing that... but I might just give it a shot. Thanks for passing that info along.

Good to hear. I've been reading this and other US TT forums for some time and I've never seen this little "trick" mentioned. So I thought why not mention it....
