I just loaded the 2009 North American map update to my Nuvi 760 and it took between 45 minutes to 1 hour (I was away when it completed but it was less than 1 hour.
Downloading the data from the Garmin site did take me a little more than 2 hours though.

Garmin has been really slow to implement USB 2 on their units for some reason. Not to make you jealous, but uploading the 2009 maps to my Nuvi 5000 was really fast - I'd guess perhaps 2 minutes
May I know under what circumstances I can get an US 2009 map update?
I received my 760 from Amazon recently and registered the set with Garmin International. The US 2008 map unlock date was shown as 14 Jun 08. As the set was purchased after the release of the 2009 map, I thought there should be an update available. There is however, no indication from Garmin that a free update is available under the account.
I have also emailed to Garmin on the matter but to date, no reply, nothing from Garmin.

Does the 760 still run on USB1?
Obviously it does, or it wouldn't take anything like an hour to copy a 2GB file. When I had a 650 I was shocked to find it didn't use USB 2. I think the 5000 was the first model to include USB 2, and now the 800 series. Perhaps the 2x5 also has it?
I also believe the 800 series has switched to micro SD cards, but the 5000 still has uses the full size SD card.

5000 UPDATE Sat Jun 28, 2008 4:41 pm
Boyd,
When you updated your Nuvi 5000 did you use the USB on the back of the unit or did you use the USB on the back of the cradle?
The port on my cradle does nothing. When I go to update the maps all is fine until I get to the part about unplugging the USB cable and letting the nuvi finish installing the software. I unplug the USB and the unit goes dead, no battery--of course it is going to go dead. I tried it with the cradle and the ac power and the computer does not see the gps. The cradle USB port doesn't work.
I got one reply back from Garmin that said that I should use the USB port on the GPS, but to use some link. The link didn't run on my computer.
I got another reply back stating that I should use the cradle and to call a number. I the meantime I have been trying to upgrade my internet from dial up to DSL, but have had nothing but problems with rain. (Although I think they fixed it.)
I bought the DVD version (because I had dial up) and it still involved hours of downloading (with dial up, maybe 15 minutes with DSL) but like I say all goes well until I unplug the USB cable.
Just wondering how it worked for you so when I call Garmin on Monday, I will have some factual basis.

Just registered my new 760 last week. 2008 unlock was the same date as I registered. Having read on this forum and others, the problems encountered, I called Garmin Tech Support and spoke w/Joe. My unit showed initial sat acquisition of 12/07. Joe assured me this was a new unit and that the problem was that the factory was powering up some units before shipping, thus the older date.
Within an hour, Joe had the problem corrected. You will have to keep checking your Garmin/My Maps/Download page. A new line towards the top of the page (above the lines that say you can purchase with discount) will be added indicating that you are eligible for free upgrade.
Be patient...I was on hold for ~45mins...still alot faster than others (like yourself) have reported on email response.
Good luck

I also just got my Garmin and registered it. I called Garmin support and asked for the free Maps 2009 CD. They checked my serial number that I registered and are sending the free CD.
Thanks Cobra909 and 4harpers for the replies... just check myGarmin and still the same, its already more than a month since I got the set from Amazon, no indication that I can proceed to download an updated US map.
May be another email to gently remind the busy folks over at Garmin?

Definitely try calling Garmin support if you can, even if you've already emailed them. The number is 1-800-800-1020. One month email response time is too long to wait for a reply. Your call's hold-time may be 30-60 minutes but it will get the issue resolved right away. Try calling Garmin early when they first open (8 am Central time) to minimize the call's hold-time. I've gotten through in under five minutes when I called early.
