PostHow to delete sample pictures (Nuvi 760)  Tue Jul 01, 2008 5:31 am    Reply to topic Reply with quote

Anybody knows how to delete the sample pictures that came with the Nuvi 760 unit?

I tried the my computer, delete all the JPEG files steps, but they still showed up in the unit system.

Thanks,

Have you tried resetting your 760?

No, is there a reset button? How do you reset it?

You can try a soft reset by sliding the power switch to the left and holding it there until it restarts.

To do a hard reset hold your finger on the bottom right corner of the screen when the 760 is powering up. It will ask you if you want to delete / erase all user settings, etc..

I think both of these are in the manual.

A reset will not delete those images. If you mount the Nuvi via USB you should find the images in the JPEG folder.

The JPEG folder is already empty, but I still see the pictures in the Nuvi.

Yeah-- I see now those pictures are automatically re-created at boot time if they have been removed. Weird.

What version of the software are you using? On my 760, when I removed all of the images except for one of them (used as my splash screen) they did not show up.

You could try putting one of your own images there to see if that clears them out. I wonder if the nuvi detects an empty jpeg folder and recreates the images (but from where - they take up memory as a backup somewhere). Maybe they do this because the app doesn't do well with an empty folder when you try to use the picture viewer.

Not to scare you, but...

I do know that I have returned 2 760 units (for different problems). My latest 760 was working great until I removed all of the images from the jpeg folder and put one of my own in for the splash screen. After I did that the bootup screen with the Garmin logo was displayed completely distorted and it wouldn't boot past it. It wouldn't get to the "loading maps" screen, etc. Because of this, I could not mount it as a drive to try and fix it, nor do a master reset because it wouldn't boot far enough to respond to user input. My other unit (problem with the speaker distorting) worked just fine placing that same image in the folder and setting it to the splash screen. From what I have read, some of these units can be very finicky when moving around files on them.

Both of my units were purchased from Costco. I am going today to get a 760 from Best Buy - we'll see how that goes. I am wondering if Costco got a bad batch or I just got unlucky twice. My first unit (with the speaker problem) may actually have been working fine and I was just expecting more out of the sound of it. The second unit seemed a little bit better with the speaker and I was happy with it (more sensitive touch screen, too) until it locked up after having it for 2 days. I know I could have sent it back to Garmin but I didn't want go through that hassle.

My images on my 750 do not come back after boot time. Deleted the sample pictures and they still aren't there. Maybe i am running older firmware. i havent updated since march or so. Any particular reason as to why you want to remove them, they aren't taking up too much space anyway.

Okay guys, I've figured it out!!!

Here are the steps,

First, Connect your Nuvi unit to your computer via USB, then go to my computer, open your Nuvi drive, and back up everything you have there (except the JPEG files) to your computer. Yes, it takes a while to back up.

Second, Go back to my computer, and right click on the Nuvi drive, and format it completely. (Copy the drive label/name before you format it, so that you can paste it after the format)

Third, Copy the files you've backed up earlier back to the Nuvi unit, update the sofware + additional downloads if necessary

Finally, Remove the unit from the computer, and start it up, it should be clean now. (You might have to reconfigure some of the settings)

!!!WARNING!!! DO NOT EVER FORMAT IT BEFORE YOU MAKE BACK UPS.
If you do, then there is no way to recover it.

I know the issue has been solved for the OP, but I just wanted to say something.

I wasn't saying the reset would delete those images. I was thinking that resetting it *AFTER* he had deleted them might actually "flush" the images that he deleted if they were somehow cached in the unit's memory.

Since this forum is not computer biased (thankfully) I will add that for Mac users (which includes me) it MUCH simpler. Just connect the Nuvi to your Mac and wait for the drive icon to appear on your desktop. Open the drive, then open the JPEG folder and delete the pics. Empty the Mac's Trash and your done. Disconnect your Nuvi and the pics are gone.

That isn't working for me. That is what I tried before, but the next time the Nuvi rebooted the images were recreated.

They key here is to Re-Format the system. Once you wipe it out, it'll never come back.

Prior to my post without issue I just deleted the photos off my Nuvi using my iMac. I just simply emptied the Trash which is the key action and the photos were gone when I booted up my 760. The Nuvi appears as any standard removable drive on the Mac so removing items is no different. There should be no reason to reformat or do any special action to the Nuvi system just to delete the preinstalled pics. I don't know why it didn't work for you however.

I had the same problem as bacevedo where after trying to use one of my own jpegs for a splash screen I got the distorted splash and it wouldn't launch anymore. It was also purchased from Costco. I've done a lot of googling on this and it looks like most problem units are coming from Costco.

Called Garmin and they are exchanging it for me. Hopefully the replacement will be better.

Very interesting rcoencas. I have a new one coming from CompuPlus (they still have some for $354) - Best Buy was out of stock and back ordered. Plus, I just wasn't too sure about the piano black finish on it.

On my new unit I am debating whether or not to even try and customize it for fear of bricking it again. The issue you and I had was a bad one - the unit HAD to be sent back to Garmin - there was nothing we could do to salvage it.

I guess if I do have an issue, I at least know Garmin stands behind it. I will say their customer service so far has been excellent. I was emailing back and forth with a support person over the weekend even though they were closed. I had spoken with him on Friday and then sent a follow up email. He was in the office trying to catch up over the weekend and was actually answering questions and taking care of some issues on my myGarmin account (removing the old 760). I was impressed that he actually did it. He was a nice guy, too, when I spoke with him on the phone.

As for the units coming from Costco having issues - it could be they got a bad batch or that a lot of people just recently bought from them because of their great deal. When you have a high percentage of products being bought from one vendor, your percentage of problem units goes up, too. I never worry that Costco is knowingly selling me refurb or "tainted" merchandise. That's just not how they run their business.

I agree about Costco, it could be a bad batch or the sheer volume as you suggest. The guy who helped me at Garmin was a nice guy too. The only thing that was a bit of a drag was he said they'd exchange it for me directly, instead of sending me back to Costco, but if I wanted them to send out the replacement I'd have to pay MSRP up front and they would refund it when they got the bricked one back. He also said they would take care of transferring the serial numbers on myGarmin account.

Hope it works out for you too with the new unit. I really like it and hope to get one that works properly.

Garmin nuvi 250W JPEG images

Using an XP computer I deleted one of the 9 sample images in the JPEG folder on my nuvi 250W and copied in one of my own which had about the same pixel dimensions and file size.

On nuvi 250W power up the Picture Viewer did not include the deleted picture and did include the added picture. All the Picture Viewer functions worked normally (slide show, full screen, increase, decrease)

I Added a JPEG folder to an SD card and copied another picture into it. With the card plugged into the nuvi 250W, that picture was added to those above and again everything worked. With the card unplugged only the eight samples and the one added above were shown.

When you add music to your Nuvi, sometimes there's an album cover or the like added with the music. They're not JPG files, but included with the MP3 files and the only way to get rid of them is to delete your music files. I have the same condition with my system as do many others!

These can be deleted from a "DOS" command prompt. CD to the JPEG directory on the device (mine is the "k:" drive) and use the delete command (e.g. "del *.jpg" to remove all .jpg files in the folder). I assume that this can also be accomplished from a terminal window on a Mac but I have never tried.

The problem isn't with Costco...it's with Garmin... Garmin puts out far too many products with problems/defects...At Garmin it seems that quality control is virtually nonexistent. Much of the customer service that people praise Garmin for shouldn't be necessary in the first place.

BTW, had a new Garmin Experience this morning....when turning on my 755T (battery power) squealed like a banchee until I shut it off and then turned back on.
