PostGooglemaps to Garmin 760  Sun Jul 20, 2008 5:46 pm    Reply to topic Reply with quote

This solution has probably been discussed before, and it probably works for more than the 760. My guess is that it will work for all 6xx and 7xx series.

I've been trying to find a simple solution to convert Google maps to Garmin routes and found it here:
http://www.elsewhere.org/journal/gmaptogpx/

In essence, you create your route in Google maps and then click the recommended url bookmark.

Save the GPX file to the Garmin device and from "My Data" (under Tools) convert the file to a route. You are done.

If this has already been covered, I apologize.

PostLoading GPX into GPS  Wed Oct 01, 2008 4:57 pm    Reply to topic Reply with quote

I've followed the instructions and now have a GPX file (output from GM2GPX on Firefox toolbar). How do you load it into the GPS? Use POI Loader, copy the file to the GPS hard drive?

I'm testing with a single route now. How do you put multiple routes into the GPS? Paste each route output into a single GPX file?

I have a C580 but presume the instructions are the same for Nuvi models.

Someone on a different forum answered that the C580 doesn't support route downloads. Oh well. Enjoy current unit and upgrade later.

I created the gpx file, but which file folder do I send it to my Nuvi255? Also, under My Data, there are only 3 entries : set home location, delete favorites, clear trip log. No option to convert .gpx file to route.

TIA.

The Nuvi 200 series doesn't support routes so it can't import a GPX file.

did you use the weblink per these instructions?

http://www.elsewhere.org/journal/gmaptogpx/#

once you have the GMapToGPX window, cut and paste the entire text into a notepad file, save it, and Rename it, change the file extension to .gpx.

copy that resulting file to the GPX folder on your Garmin 760, and you should be able to import it as a route. I've done it success fully with my Garmin 850, can't guarantee it will work the same way.

I followed it to a tea. The problem is my Mac won't let me change the extension to a .gpx, it keeps adding .txt to the end of it.

Example mymap.gpx.txt

No matter what I do, the .txt is added.

you can't change the file extension? I didn't realize you were on a MAC.

On my 850, I used these steps: (after cutting and pasting to create the file that I renamed to .gpx

maybe it will work as a text file, try these steps after copying your txt file to the GPX folder on your 760,

Disconnect the GPS now, in your GPS unit, go to "Tools" then "My Data" then click "Import Routes From File"

you should see a route as "route0" (it doesn't seem to matter what you name the file, it will show up as "route0") this will be the one from the .gpx file you added.

check "route0" and then click on "import" it will import and tell you "Data was successfully imported" Click "OK" to finish.

go back now to "routes" select route0, click on "Edit" then "Change Name" now you can name it properly.

Click on "show map" and you can see your map, it should do any/all "drag to route" customizing you did in Google maps.

once you are done, delete the gpx file you saved in the \Garmin\GPX folder, or you'll end up with multiple "route0" choices when you try importing another route.

I've tested it on three routes, and it works perfectly,

While you are in the Finder, go to Finder > Preferences > Advanced, Check "Show all file extensions" and "Show warning before changing an extension". Then you should be able to change the extension, and it will ask you to confirm it so that you don't accidentally mess something up in the future.

OK, I made the route in Google maps, used the GMaptoGPX and saved the file with a .gpx extension. I then copied the file to my Garmin/GPX folder. So far so good.

I then opened up my 765t, and looked under Tools/My Data/Import Route from File, and there is no file to import.

Does it matter what I name it when I save the file as a .gpx?

The file still shows in my Garmin/GPX folder but it is not available for me to import. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Bob

I don't know for sure, but possibly if you are on a MAC this simply may not work.

here are the first five lines of a recent trip I was able to import

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<gpx version="1.1"
creator="GMapToGPX 6.3a - http://www.elsewhere.org/GMapToGPX/"
xmlns="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1"
xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1 http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1/gpx.xsd">
<rte>
<name>route0</name>

Please note the last line, this is the file name it shows for me to import
route0.....

It must have something to do with the Mac. I just redid the route again, and it just does not show as a file to import.

I have used RoadTrip, but every route I create keeps telling me to do u-turns before each turn.
